Menstrual Products

Menstrual products are items designed to manage blood flow during a menstruators period. These products help individuals stay clean, comfortable, and confident during menstruation. In this post, we’re going to dive into the 3 most popular period products and their functions.

PADS

Also referred to as sanitary napkins, pads are normally composed of bleached rayon, cotton, and plastic. These materials are used to create a flexible and narrow piece of absorbent which sticks to underwear and absorbs blood. These types of pads are disposable and are meant to be thrown away after one use. Some pads, however, are made from a fabric which can be washed and reused. Pads come in different absorbencies according to the heaviness or lightness of a menstrual flow. They are most commonly used at night.

TAMPONS

Tampons are little plugs, commonly made out of cotton, that are inserted into a menstruators vagina to absorb blood. They are regulated by the FDA and are meant to be used only once. Tampons normally come with a plastic applicator and string for easy insertion and removal. Tampons can’t get stuck, a common misconception in society, as the muscles in a vagina hold them in place. Tampons are commonly used while swimming or participating in physical activities.

MENSTRUAL CUPS

Menstrual cups are commonly made out of rubber, plastic, or silicone. These flexible cups are inserted into a menstruators vagina to catch and collect a menstrual flow. They come in different shapes and sizes and can be used for up to 12 hours. These cups are both a cost and eco-friendly alternative to other period products as they can be reused after emptying and washing. Although, some menstrual cups can be made for one-time usage. Like tampons, these can not get stuck as the muscles in a vagina hold them in place.
